Earning BC High School Credit Toward Graduation

Did you know that piano students can receive high school credit for taking piano lessons in B.C.? Many of West Vancouver’s piano teacher Yuki’s piano students continue to take piano lessons when they reach high school so that they could receive high school credit for taking Royal Conservatory of Music examinations.

Additional specialised programs for high school students are available in areas ranging from career programs and credit for learning outside of the British Columbia school system. One of which is categorised as “External Credit Courses”. You can earn credit toward graduation from high school by taking a specialised program outside the B.C. school system. An example is graduation credits for Grade 10, 11 and 12 given to piano students, who have completed the Royal Conservatory of Music training.

For your reference, below is a table of accepted Royal Conservatory of Music examinations for high school credit, which is accurate as of October 2018. Please confirm with B.C’s Ministry of Education for the latest information.

Music Organisations Offering Approved External Credentials Other than Royal Conservatory of Music

Other music organisations, which offer approved external credentials for music other than Royal Conservatory of Music, are Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in Canada, BC Conservatory of Music, Conservatory Canada, London College of Music, and Trinity College London.

They offer courses, which meet specific criteria in order to be authorised as an external credential course by B.C.’s Ministry of Education. According to the Ministry, their courses include the same (or greater) level of depth, breadth and rigour as would be found in Ministry-developed grade 10, 11 and 12 courses as well as an evaluation component that assesses the intended learning outcomes. These organisations are governed by a provincial, national or international body, have certified instructors and non-discriminatory and offer credentials that are available to a significant number of students throughout B.C.
