Parent Participation

I have noticed that successful piano students I have had so far were learning to play the piano together with their parent until around the age of 9. These piano students’ parents did not simply ask or nag their children to do their piano homework while they were doing something else. If you truly want your child to succeed in learning to play the piano, parent participation during each piano lesson and at home is a must.

Please note that the piano student needs your full attention during each piano lesson. You need to make sure that your child is focusing and paying attention during the piano lesson. You need to make sure that your child understood the piano lesson materials presented during the lesson. And you need to make sure that you know what the piano homework is at the end of the lesson.

Once you are at home, you need to go over the piano homework by reviewing the piano lesson materials presented during the lesson. You need to help your child establish good piano practise habits.

Siblings

If your child has a sibling, please do your best to make sure that she is taken care of elsewhere during the piano lesson. I do have a waiting room in my piano studio. If the sibling can sit quietly, she is welcome to stay there.

Waiting Room

Before using the waiting room, please ask the piano teacher whether the waiting room is open or not. She needs to be aware if the room is going to be used or not, who will be in the room and who will be supervising.

Please keep the toys and books in the waiting room and do not bring them to the piano teaching room. Parent and/or child must clean up the toys and books after you finish playing with them.

Please note, since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the waiting room of the piano studio has been closed. It shall remain closed until further notice.

The piano studio is bright and spacious. It is located on the main floor of a house rather than the basement.

The piano teacher’s teaching room of the piano studio is equipped with the following:

  • An acoustic piano for private piano lessons and for playing solo or duet
  • Electric keyboards for group music classes or playing duos
  • A variety of rhythm instruments to learn musical concepts, such as beat and rhythm
  • Music teaching tools, such as music games, stuffed animals, hand puppets, finger puppets and crafts, to make each piano student’s experience be more fun and make each musical activity more developmentally appropriate
  • Reward stickers and other piano practise incentives
  • Large floor keyboard and grand staff to offer visual aid and spatial experience

There shall be no rough handling of any musical instruments or any other items in the piano studio. And please supervise and make sure that your child walks inside the piano studio for her own safety.

Punctuality

Please be on time for your child’s piano lesson. You may wish to consider arriving a few minutes early and wait in the car just outside the piano studio until just before the piano lesson or stay and relax in my piano studio’s waiting room. If you are late, it is your child, who misses out.

Shoes

Please take off your outside shoes and wear inside shoes to keep the piano studio clean.

Cell Phones

Please put all of your cell phones (your cell phone and your child’s cell phone if she has one) on silent mode or switch them off. It is absolutely necessary that you need to take a phone call, please go outside the piano studio to avoid disturbing your child’s piano lesson.

Food

Each piano student is welcome to bring her own water bottle. However, please ensure that there are no gum, food or drink anywhere in the piano studio (both the piano teacher’s teaching room and the waiting room) during the piano lesson time.
